ALANA (African, Latino/Hispanic, Asian and Native American) Network is a student-run group that meets weekly during the academic year in order to plan and promote student and community activities.
The Network seeks to foster an overall inclusive environment and awareness of diversity among its members and the entire Assumption University community. It also strives to educate and engage the Assumption community through various activities such as; multicultural events, panel discussions, weekly meetings, lectures, performances, etc.
The Network works collaboratively with other student organizations within the Assumption community as well as student organizations in the ALANA Support Network Consortium.
Some Events and Activities put on by ALANA:
Multicultural Day : This event encompasses an array of cultural foods and traditions on campus. Every year, we hold a space that invites various tables of foods to come for students to try. Some foods we’ve had are Haitian rice and beans, griot, plantains, empanadas, Italian cookie and gelato, Cuban yucca, Irish cabbage and ham, Indian breads and Greek baklava.
Latino Heritage Dinner : Annual dinner celebration that includes dancing, live music, delicious Latino foods from the Worcester Community and fellowship with one another as we celebrate the Latino community during Latino Heritage Months.
Black History Month: ALANA commits to a number of programs within Black History Month. Some of these programs include an educational panel on a topical focus (regarding social and racial injustices in the Black community, language in the community, etc.), our Hound N Out improve/comedy night, and our Black History Month Dinner at Taylor Dining Hall.
Native American Speaker Event: In recognition and celebration of Native American History Month, we’ve had the pleasure of having Larry Spotted Crown Mann on campus to share stories and educate the community on the indigenous community and lands. We have also had storytelling, dance and food on campus.
Women’s History Month: ALANA is able to host an event honoring and recognizing our women at the Assumption community.
Step and Dance: This is our annual dance competition with various dance teams in the New England area.
