We are seeking a creative and organized intern for our joint Editorial and Publicity Fall internship. This position is a wonderful opportunity for someone with an interest in serious ideas who wants to learn about all facets of book publishing and develop excellent writing and communication skills. The internship runs from September – December, is 28 hours a week (4 days a week), and is paid $15 an hour. Two days are spent working in the editorial department and the other two days in the publicity department.

In order to be considered, please submit a resume and a cover letter. The cover letter should (1) address the applicant’s specific interest in the nonfiction publishing programs at Basic Books and Seal Press and (2) briefly discuss a piece of nonfiction writing (e.g. a book, a book review, or an essay or article) that changed how you think about something.
Editorial responsibilities include:
- Reviewing and reporting on book proposals
- Drafting jacket flap copy and other descriptive material
- Researching comparative works and sales figures
- Assisting with book mailings and awards submissions
- Contributing to discussions of proposed books and potential authors
Publicity responsibilities include:
- Researching media contacts and maintaining databases
- Assisting with galley and review copy mailings
- Helping publicists pitch books and assisting in responding to media queries
- Writing press materials
- College student, graduating senior, or recent graduate
- 28 hours/week commitment
- Passion for history, science, or the social sciences
- Strong interest in nonfiction book publishing
- Exceptional writing and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
- Extremely detail oriented and organized
